Philippines: Among Top Five Countries for Number of Out-of-School Children

Based on a recent report from UNESCO's Institute for Statistics more than 57 million children are denied the right to primary education. Nigeria tops the list with 10.5 million out-of-school children. The top five countries are: Nigeria (10.5 million); Pakistan (5.1 million); Ethiopia (2.4 million); India (2.3 million) and the Philippines (1.5 million). Out of school data for the other countries in the region are as follows: Thailand (611,000); Lao (23,000); Cambodia (73,000); Vietnam (121,000); Indonesia (236,000).
